Intimate Partner Violence Affecting Latina Women and Their Children

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a public healthconcern spanning all cultures, socioeconomic classes,and geographic areas. It is defined as “harm by acurrent or former partner or spouse. This type of violencecan occur among heterosexual or same-sex couples and doesnot require sexual intimacy.” IPV encompasses physicaland sexual violence, threats of violence, and emotionalabuse. Increased awareness of IPV has raised concerns forthe well-being of women and children who are exposed toabuse. Research on children’s experience with IPV suggeststhat witnessing violence is damaging to a child’s emotional, physical, and social well-being.
